Dental Implants: Daily care for your investment

Dental implants: Daily care

Have you recently invested in dental implants?

Daily care of your implants is key to maintaining the health of their supporting structures (gum and bone).

As soon as implants are placed, daily removal of plaque is a necessity. Just like cleaning natural teeth we need to use a combination of cleaning tools and steps (toothbrush, floss, toothpaste etc) to ensure adequate removal of plaque. Whether you have a single implant, implant supported bridge or implant supported overdenture, below are a few tools that can help with plaque removal.

  • Toothbrushes: whether you use a manual or powered toothbrush, angle the bristles towards the gumline at a 45 degree angle before circular motion is applied.

  • For hard to reach places, smaller end “tufted” toothbrushes are great.

  • Flossing- for single implants, wrap floss around entire implant at gum level and slide as far down as possible until hidden under gums and apply “see-saw” motion so floss moves around implant under attached crown.

  • Floss threaders and interdental brushes are great for under bridges and dentures!

Simply apply underneath/in-between fixtures to clean out plaque/food in the hard to reach places the toothbrush doesn’t clean.
