Custom Sports Mouthguards
Why wear a mouthguard and what type to wear:
Wearing a protective mouth guard prevents, or minimises the severity of, dental injuries caused to children and adults playing sport every year. Mouth guards should be worn whilst playing and training for any sport that could involve contact to the face, such as: football, boxing, basketball, netball, hockey, martial arts etc.
The ADA (Australian Dental Association) recommends that only a professionally custom-fitted mouth guard should be worn. Your mouth guard should be checked every 12 months for optimal fit and protection.
At VC Dental, mouth guards are made in our on-site laboratory from high quality, Australian sourced materials. They are produced on the patient’s own unique replica model with a pressure-form machine to ensure it fits correctly, provides the highest degree of protection and is comfortable to wear. A range of colours and designs are available for patients’ personal preference or to match team colours. All our mouth guards are professionally made and tailored to fit perfectly.
Preventing the injury to your own or your child’s teeth and mouth justifies a lifetime cost of dental/oral injury. Custom-fitted mouth guards should be comfortable, allow you to talk, have maximum resistance to dislodgement and should not restrict breathing.
Over the counter “Boil & Bite” mouth guards from chemists or retail outlets are inadequate and provide ineffective protection. This is because they are a universal size designed to fit all, which does not adapt to your unique teeth and gums properly and can therefore still cause damage to teeth on impact. They are usually bulky and loose fitting, making talking, breathing and staying in place difficult; detracting from the sporting experience.
