Cone Beam CT Scanning
Cone Beam CT Scan Technology:
Cone Beam CT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) scanning is a new, superior type of 3D digital imaging. This state of the art technology provides highly accurate images for dental diagnosis, planning and treatment.
The digital scanner uses x-rays and a computer to produce high resolution, three-dimensional or cross-sectional images of the teeth, upper and lower jaw bone, and surrounding anatomy in a matter of minutes. The images can then be viewed on a computer screen. It is quick, non-invasive, safe and delivers precise results.
This type of imaging may also be referred to as CBCT, CBVT (Cone Beam Volumetric Tomography) or DVT (Digital Volumetric Tomography).
The scanner produces images of a “volume” (section) of your face. The size of this volume depends on your particular clinical requirements.
Cone beam imaging is a more advanced version of CT scanning. Because cone beam imaging is so efficient, it exposes you to significantly lower radiation levels than traditional medical-grade CT scanning, whilst delivering quicker and easier imaging acquisition.
The three-dimensional images are far more detailed than traditional two-dimensional x-rays. They provide precise 360 degree views of your teeth in relation to their location, and proximity to other anatomy (such as nerves and sinuses); delivering greater diagnostic information to your treating practitioner. This enables a level of anatomical accuracy that was not possible with past two dimensional technology.
VC Dental is committed to providing our patients with the most innovative and modern technology to continually delivery high quality patient care.
The scanning procedure is quick and painless. You will need to stand still for around 15-20 seconds underneath the machine. There is a guard for you to gently bite onto and your head will be supported to ensure there is no movement. The machine will perform a single rotation around your head. Then you are able to relax back in the dental chair whilst the computer processes your three dimensional image in a number of minutes.
No special aftercare is necessary. After your dental appointment is complete, you will be able to go home straight away and return to all your normal activities.
We cater for all patients. If unable to stand, patients can be seated under the machine.
What we use it for:
Cone beam technology is used for thorough diagnosis and treatment planning across a wide range of areas in dentistry. The high resolution images are excellent for more complex cases as they allow every aspect of your anatomy to be considered including dental structures, soft tissues, nerve paths, jaw and face bones. Some of the many applications include:
- Dental implants
- Orthodontic treatment (braces and invisalign)
- Endodontic treatment (root canal therapy)
- Impacted wisdom teeth
- Bone loss related to the progression of periodontal (gum) disease
- TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) disorder
- Trauma such as tooth, root and/or facial fractures
- Evaluation of the jaw, sinuses and nerve canals
- Detect and measure bone density
